How did the Dragon Boat Festival come about?  

端午節(jié)是怎么來的呢？ 

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is often associated with the death of a Chinese poet called Qu Yuan。

端午節(jié)的起源常常會跟中國古代詩人屈原的死聯(lián)系在一起。

Story of Qu Yuan

In Chinese history, Qu Yuan was a poet and a top advisor during the Warring States period for the State of Chu. 

（在中國歷史上，屈原是戰(zhàn)國時期楚國的一位詩人和政治家）

He was accused of treason and was exiled by the king of Chu.

(他被控告有叛國罪，被楚王流放） After being exiled, Qu Yuan expressed his love and passion for his country by writing many poems. 

（被流放之后，屈原通過些很多詩歌來表達自己對國家的熱愛）

On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, Qu Yuan drowned himself because he couldn’t bear to see his country  being conquered by the state of Qin. 

（在農(nóng)歷五月的第五天，屈原投河自盡，因為他無法忍受看到自己的國家被秦國征服）

When the local villagers heard this news they were distraught, so they set out in their fishing boats to look for Qu  Yuan’s body, but they couldn't find it.

So instead, they threw lumps of rice into the river so that the fish or any hungry beasts would eat that rice instead  of eating Qu Yuan’s body.

And to remember Qu Yuan, people started to race boats and eat rice dumplings on this day.

It is a tradition to eat rice dumplings.

During the festival, people drink realgar wine and hang mugwort leaves on the door to  repel bad spirits and diseases.
